Oscar Saul Aranda Mena

A Biologist by profession, naturalist by conviction, was born on June 6th of 1974 in the city of Leon, in the State of Guanajuato , Mexico.

Fortunate of having a nature-loverīs family, he had the opportunity to travel around the whole country since kid, always in that time camping in remote places and not very well-known, remain obstinately in wild conditions, like the ancient man, although later had been submitted by his parents, like an universal rule.

Since early years he was shown very interested for the nature, mainly for those animals that his mom feared them and she had forbidden him to take them home; as reptiles, rodents and all kinds of repulsive animals, bringing home as many animals he found in his way.

So he began rescuing any animal found in his way, not denying that many of those animals were not fortunate to cross his path, but with something he had to learn...

With a happy life although a little lonely, he found in the nature a profound link to carry out his games, dreams and adventures, for which little by little he was achieving his dads to accept the idea that that was his destiny.

So he spent his younger years collecting and saving all kind of animals, even when studying his profession. For that, he had to shift his residence, moving of city to study the career of Biology, because in that time was not available in the whole state of Guanajuato, and undecided where to study, he visited several universities until finding the appropriate one.

In 1995 he moved to Guadalajara City, where he studied Biology at the University of Guadalajara, and he moved to Puerto Vallarta city to carry out a specialization in Marine Biology, concluding in 1999. During his studies, he had the opportunity to travel and know unique natural enviroments in Mexico, discovering his real passion for the sea, although he never loses the opportunity to get into the forest, or even in an abandoned land or property, to see what kind of bugs he can find.

Then, he carried out his Thesis with a wide study about the reef fish of the Bay of Banderas, diving during one year in varied places of the Bay, and discovering species not reported for the area, as well as how complex is the existent relationship among all the organisms of the reefs.

However destiny did have planned something different for him, beginning to work with marine turtles, in a project generated by one of the most important non profit organizations in Mexico, discovering swiftly a passion for the "not so secret" life of these not very understood animals.

Since then and nowadays, he is in charge of the general operation of this project in Puerto Vallarta, managed by Unidos para la Conservacion, A.C., being as well Secretary of the Council for the Protection and Preservation of the Marine Turtle in Puerto Vallarta.

He has a special affection for those crippled, injured or mutilated turtles, wich cannot dig a nest by themselves, patiently bringing them help to dig, letting them to lay their eggs finally.

During winter (december to march), when the marine turtles are gone, he is devoted to work with the Humpback Whales, participating in research (photo-identification) and specialized whale-watching tours since 2002.

During this months, big opportunities exist to observe whales of several species, as well as dolphins, orcas, sea turtles, manta rays and many other amazing animals that live or visit the Bay of Banderas every year.

He has participated in the realization of documentals, articles and tv reports about these organisms in the region, waiting a stroke of good luck to get more support and contributions that permit to achieve more and more ambitious projects.
